The international group of scientists from leading universities of the world has launched in Internet the Encyclopedia of Life - many mullions project which will incorporate and catalog all known biological species on the Earth.
By analogy to Wikipedia encyclopedia it is planned to introduce a system of free editing on a site - users can edit articles, place there photos and other records. Each material will contain not only the detailed information on each species, but also audio and videorecords, and also interactive cards.
For today science knows about 1,8 million biological species. But first of all, uniform database will place materials about animals, plants and mushrooms. Also scientists plan to place on a site the information about microorganisms.
To create the Encyclopedia of a life (EOL) the nongovernmental organizations spent two grants for a total sum of about $13 million. Among the participants of the project there are Harvard University and Smithsonian Institution. It is planned to fill the databases within 10 years.
