The American astronomers have measured a black hole
The American astronomers managed to measure a black hole in the center of a far galaxy. For this purpose telescope Сhandra needed to observe the cloud of gas closing the black hole for two weeks in April this year.
Space telescope Chandra observed black hole eclipse in the center of NGC 1365 galaxy located in 60 million light years from the Earth. This galaxy has an active nucleus with supermassive black hole in the center. The substance falling on it forms heated up to millions degrees disc letting out photons in X-ray range.
Scientists from Harward - Smithson Astrophysics Center and the Italian Astronomical Institute observed an eclipse. But for this eclipse scientists could measure a black hole in a far galaxy, as the x-ray source is too small to make its gauging on such distance.
The estimation of entrance and exit time of a source from an eclipse has allowed scientists to determine: the size is equal to seven astronomical units (distance from the Earth up to the Sun). Thus, theoretically predicted sizes of supermassive black holes in the center of galaxies are confirmed now by observation.
