Scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology have researched an asteroid Apophis which in 2029 will pass in 35 thousand kilometers from the Earth that is more than ten times closer, than Moon orbit.

Experts inform, that Apophis will fly by so close to the Earth on April, 13, 2029, and there is a high probability, that it can damage artificial satellites which are in a geostationary orbit, and also revolve at height of about 35 thousand kilometers.

And when in 2036 this asteroid will again come nearer to the Earth, there is probability, namely 1 chance from 45 thousand that Apophis will collide with the Earth.

Therefore astronomers have decided to study thoroughly this moving and dangerous to the Earth object. To study the object astronomers have used MIT Magellan telescope in Chile and NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii.

Its sizes, according to different estimations, make from 270 up to 415 meters in diameter. If it collides with the Earth, a region in the size more than France can suffer. If the asteroid falls in the ocean, it can cause huge tsunami.

However experts assure that there are many ways for elimination of asteroid threat: rocket or laser attack, space sail and others.
