Representatives of the British committee on fertilization and embryology have basically agreed to permit creation of embryos-hybrids for scientific researches.
However they have warned that the scientists, wishing to use such hybrids, should submit independent applications.
The committee has organized public consultations on this question. They have shown that public does not object to this idea when the question is about help in finding treatment for such heavy diseases, as, for example, primary neuronal degeneration.
However opponents declare that many people are horror-struck from prospect of using of hybrid embryos - the person and an animal.
Scientists want to create embryos-hybrids to take stem cells from them. Then within 14 days embryos will be destroyed.
Stem cells form the basic building material of an organism and can potentially be transformed to any tissue. Therefore these cells are so important for scientific researches.
At the moment scientists use embryos which remain unused after barreness treatment. But these embryos are not enough and not always they are high quality.
British government is going to develop the new law concerning such researches. The current law regulating embryology researches is obsolete and does not take into account new opportunities.
