Solar batteries’ coefficient of efficiency has reached the record value
Due to the joint efforts of laboratories, the research centers and commercial enterprises, USA scientists have managed to set a new record of solar batteries’ efficiency – it has made 42,8 percents.
The previous record was 40,7 percents, but for the area where the win in 0,2 percent is a norm, and one percent is a break-through, it is a very significant step.
Experts mark, that the basic losses of energy in solar batteries are connected to reflection of part of sunlight from a surface, radiation passing through the converter without absorption, internal resistance of the converter and other physical processes.
Allen Barnett and Christian Honsberg, employees of the Delaware University, who headed the research, informed that the program has been started and financed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense.
In the press release they have also informed that the final goal of the Advanced Research Projects Agency is creation of the cheap portable solar battery for army equipment. The present task for the scientists is to make efficiency up to 50 percents.
Now the following stage of the project has been launched: transition from laboratory researches to creation of the working prototype. According to the Advanced Research Projects Agency, that will take three years and will need about 100 millions dollars.
